| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa recherche vise à mettre en évidence des effets pervers du discours moralisant en matière de racisme. Deux expériences ont comparé les attitudes envers les étrangers des sujets français et japonais, ainsi que leurs réactions à une tentative de persuasion pro-étrangère. Contrairement aux Japonais vivant sous une moindre pression morale contre la xénophobie, la morale anti-raciste des Français les conduit à exprimer des opinions pro-étrangers. Cependant, la discrimination est maintenue de facto chez les Français, l’amélioration de l’image des étrangers étant compensée par un renforcement correspondant de l’image de soi (expérience 1), ou bien l’influence n’atteint qu’un niveau superficiel chez les Français (expérience 2). |

| Summary, etc. | This study explores some paradoxical effects of the social pressure in anti-racist efforts. Attitudes concerning foreigners as well as reactions to a pro-foreigner persuasion were compared between French and Japanese subjects. Unlike the Japanese for whom moral pressure against xenophobia is weaker, French subjects’ anti-racist morals lead them to manifest favorable opinions about foreigners. However, discrimination remains de facto, as an improved image of the foreigners entails a corresponding reinforcement of one’s own self-image (experiment 1), or the influence effect remains superficial for the French subjects (experiment 2). |
