| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’objectif de cette étude était de déterminer le rôle de deux facteurs sur le niveau d’autoritarisme de droite et de préjugés intergroupes des policiers lors d’un contact sans conflit ouvert avec des jeunes de quartiers dits sensibles. Au début de l’expérience, les élèves policiers ( n = 196) visionnaient une vidéo dans laquelle des policiers étaient en contact avec des jeunes de banlieues. Selon la condition expérimentale, lors de ce contact, la position numérique des policiers variait (infériorité vs. supériorité vs. équivalence). À la suite de la vidéo, afin d’activer un contexte normatif spécifique (intolérant vs. tolérant vs. neutre), des missions policières étaient rendues saillantes (répressive vs. préventive vs. neutre). Les résultats révèlent qu’en situation d’infériorité numérique menaçante, les élèves policiers sont significativement plus intolérants que dans les autres conditions. De manière inattendue, il apparaît que l’activation d’une mission préventive génère une augmentation d’intolérance comparable à celle déclenchée par l’activation d’une mission répressive. |

| Summary, etc. | Authoritarianism and prejudice in the police: The effect of a position of numeric inferiority and the role of the normative contextThe main goal of this research was to examine the role of two factors on the level of both Right-Wing Authoritarianism and intergroup prejudice among French police cadets in a situation of contact with young from suburbs. At the beginning of the experiment, all participants ( n = 196) watched a movie in which police officers were in contact with young from suburbs. During the contact, the numerical position of police officers was manipulated (inferiority vs. superiority vs. equivalence). At the end of the movie, a specific normative police context was activated (intolerant vs. tolerant vs. neutral) by specific police missions (repressive vs. preventive vs. neutral). Results reveal that police cadets are more intolerant in a position of inferiority than in other conditions. Unexpectedly, activation of a preventive mission leads to a similar increase in term of intolerance than the activation of a repressive mission. |
