| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’objectif de cette étude était d’examiner le lien entre la perception d’une discrimination groupale chez les fumeurs et leur identification catégorielle. Nous avons mené cette étude dans deux pays européens : en France, où la loi antitabac interdisant de fumer dans les espaces de convivialité est appliquée depuis janvier 2008, et en Roumanie, où cette loi n’est pas encore promulguée et où l’application d’autres lois anti-tabac en vigueur est moins rigoureuse. Les résultats ont montré que les fumeurs français qui perçoivent une discrimination forte s’identifient plus intensément à leur groupe que ceux qui perçoivent une discrimination faible. Aucun effet de la discrimination perçue n’est observé chez les fumeurs roumains. Cette étude suggère que les campagnes anti-tabac peuvent être efficaces seulement dans la mesure où elles ne contribuent pas à une perception de discrimination forte à l’égard de fumeurs, celle-ci pouvant renforcer paradoxalement leur identification au groupe. |

| Summary, etc. | War against smokers: What are the effects on smokers’ group identification?The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between perceptions of group-based discrimination among smokers and identification with their group. We conducted this research in two European countries: in France where a law forbidding smoking in public places is applied since 2008, and in Romania, where the same law has not been promulgated yet and other existing anti-smoking policies are less rigorous. Results showed that, among French smokers, those who perceived discrimination identified stronger with other smokers than those who perceived less discrimination. No effects of perceived discrimination were found among the Romanian smokers. This study suggests that anti-smoking measures can be efficient only if they do not contribute to a strong perception of discrimination among smokers, which can paradoxically reinforce their group identification. |
