Summary, etc. | RésuméPartant du constat d’un désenchantement du monde consécutif à la rupture des modernes avec la nature, il s’agit dans cet article de réévaluer la place des animaux pour montrer pour quelles raisons l’expérience animale est indispensable pour que l’homme puisse accomplir divers aspects de son existence sociale ou de son humanité.L’animal, en effet, est devenu un enjeu majeur pour une modernité qui éprouve le besoin de retrouver une relation à la nature par delà la rupture qui l’en a éloignée. Certaines expériences privilégiées tout d’abord (comme la caresse) permettent d’envisager la constitution de relations de communication sensible au sein desquelles se manifeste une plénitude et un bonheur relationnel sensible. D’autre part, la relation à l’animal domestique est considérée comme une extension de l’individualisme démocratique qui cherche un double inférieur de soi-même, disponible pour tout et à tout moment. Cependant l’intérêt pour l’animal sauvage n’est-il pas en même temps le signe du besoin d’un contact authentique avec une nature non encore humanisée, porteuse de significations ontologiques et d’un enrichissement de l’expérience humaine des modernes échappant à l’uniformité et à l’aliénation du monde environnant ? Plus fondamentalement encore les animaux sont alors considérés comme des médiateurs : dans le cadre d’une relation dialectique où se croisent leur identité et leur altérité relatives, ils permettent de mieux prendre conscience de ce que nous sommes, de parvenir à une forme de connaissance de soi d’autant plus précieuse qu’elle nous ouvre à la pluralité des mondes animaux. Il s’agit alors de montrer, grâce notamment à une approche d’inspiration phénoménologique, que l’identification à l’animal, loin d’être aliénante ou réductrice, nous invite à une reconsidération de notre rapport au monde. L’animal, enfin, peut-il contribuer au réenchantement du monde et nous permettre d’accéder à un humanisme intégrateur qui s’articulerait sur les relations de type anthropozoologique avec les animaux, et non plus seulement sur une frontière irréductiblement séparée ? |

Summary, etc. | Assuming that the disenchantment of the world is due to the rupture between the modern man and nature, this article aims at reassessing the importance of animals and showing why animal experience is necessary for man in order to fulfill his life as a human as well as a social being. Animals have indeed become a major stake for a modern world which has cut itself off from nature and feels the need to reconnect itself to it. On the one hand, some priviledged experiences such as stroking make it possible to establish tangible relations and experience a feeling of perfect happiness. On the other hand, the relation to pets can be seen as an extension of democratic individualism: we are in search of a double that is inferior to us, available whenever we want. The interest we feel for wild animals might mean that we need a genuine contact with a nature that has remained untouched, a nature that has an ontological meaning.It might also be a sign that the modern man, freed from the uniformity and alienation of the world around, has gained a wealth of experience. More significantly, animals may be considered as mediators: within a dialectic relation involving what they have in common with us together with what makes them different, they enable us to know ourselves better, to achieve a form of self-knowledge which is all the more valuable as it gives us access to the plurality of animal worlds. A phenomenological approach reveals that, far from being alienating or restrictive, the process of identifying with the animal leads us to reconsider our relation to the world. Animals may contribute to the “reenchantment” of the world. They may allow us to have access to a new humanism based on an anthropozoological relation rather than on an insuperable divide. |
