| Summary, etc. | RésuméUn nombre important de recherches sur les politiques infranationales interviennent en réponse à des commandes et des appels d’offre élaborés à l’extérieur du champ académique. Cette situation soulève de sérieuses questions épistémologiques et méthodologiques en raison d’enjeux politiques sous-jacents et du risque de glissement de la comparaison vers une forme de benchmarking territorial. À la lumière de deux expériences comparatives (un travail de thèse sur la régionalisation ferroviaire en France cofinancée par une grande organisation ferroviaire et un projet sur les politiques locales de l’eau soutenu par la Commission européenne), nous analysons ce que ce type partenariat implique concrètement en matière d’enquête comparative et jusqu’où il demeure compatible avec la poursuite d’objectifs de recherche. |

| Summary, etc. | A large number of researches on sub-national public policies are realized in response to orders and invitations to tender drawn up outside the academic field. This situation raises important epistemological and methodological questions, including when the research partners belong to the public sector, due to underlying political issues and the risk of shifting from comparison to a form of territorial benchmarking. In the light of two comparisons (a PhD work on railway regionalization in France funded by a big railway organization and a research project on local water policies supported by the European Commission), we analyze what this kind of partnership implies in practical terms as far as comparative enquiries are involved and to what extent it remains compatible with the pursuit of scientific goals. |
