520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Among the Aranda, the circulation of hair-belts traditionally contributed to the building up of identities. It was indeed a privileged way of weaving ties between individuals occupying complementary ritual and matrimonial positions referring, on the one hand, to the division of society into two intermarrying moieties, “strait hair” and “wavy hair”, and on the other hand, to the distinctive functions attributed to the hair of the living and of the dead. The use of hair among the Aranda emphasises its often recognized distinctive nature : hair originates from the body, as does blood, yet unlike the latter, it is solid and detachable. From this point of view, hair acts as an exchangeable body part through which social relations may be regenerated.
