| Summary, etc. | Si l’innovation est plébiscitée par tous comme gage de compétitivité, le défi demeure une réalité pour les entreprises tant le changement culturel tarde à s’imposer, d’où la nécessité du Plan Innovation annoncé en France pour l’été 2013. Parallèlement, la responsabilité sociétale des entreprises (RSE) constitue une voie de plus en plus souvent adoptée par les organisations, notamment les Petites et Moyennes Entreprises (PME). Aussi, l’objet de cet article est-il d’analyser l’impact de la capacité d’innovation responsable sur la performance globale (économique, sociale, sociétale, environnementale et personnelle) (St-Pierre et Cadieux, 2011) dans le contexte des PME. D’un point de vue méthodologique, le travail repose sur une étude de cas longitudinale menée depuis quatre ans avec une entreprise industrielle du Nord de la France, Pocheco, spécialisée dans la fabrication et la commercialisation d’enveloppes depuis 1928. Au sein de Pocheco, l’innovation est une réalité multiple traduite en termes de produit (enveloppes éco-conçues, offre de service orienté « développement durable »), de procédé (système innovant de conditionnement des enveloppes), d’organisation (association de reboisement, ouverture d’une « Maison de l’écolonomie ») et de méthodes commerciales (stratégie de marques, vente en ligne). Les résultats montrent une forte articulation entre la capacité dynamique d’innovation responsable de la PME et sa performance globale, à savoir sur les volets économique (gains de productivité, amélioration du service au client, effet de réputation), social (amélioration des conditions de travail, développement des compétences), environnemental (limitation à la source des impacts, protection de la biodiversité) et personnel (qualité de vie, estime des collaborateurs, diffusion de son expérience au travers d’un essai) du dirigeant d’entreprise. Cet article montre la possible existence d’une performance globale dans les PME. Le recours à un cas unique implique de rester modeste quant aux leçons à en tirer. Pour autant, le cas de Pocheco semble en mesure d’inspirer d’autres dirigeants d’entreprise encore majoritairement frileux pour s’engager plus massivement dans la voie du management responsable. A l’heure où la question du bien-être au travail préoccupe tant, il semble pertinent de revoir les modèles de pensée dominante fondés sur une quête effrénée de profit à court terme. |

| Summary, etc. | If innovation is acclaimed by all as a guarantee of competitiveness, the challenge remains a reality for enterprises because of the cultural change it requires, hence the “Plan Innovation” announced in France for the summer 2013. At the same time, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) constitutes a route that is more and more often adopted by organizations, including small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). Also, the purpose of this article is to analyze the impact of a dynamic capacity oriented to responsible innovation on the global performance (economic, social, environmental and personal performance) (St-Pierre and Cadieux, 2011) in SMEs. From a methodological point of view, the work is based on a longitudinal case study that has been conducted for four years with an industrial company located in the North of France (Pocheco) which has specialized in the manufacturing and selling of envelopes since 1928. At Pocheco, innovation is a multiple reality translated in terms of product (eco-designed envelopes, “sustainable development”-oriented consulting services), process (innovative system for packaging of envelopes), organization (association of reforestation, opening of a “House of the Ecolonomie") and business methods (brand strategy, online sales). The results show a strong link between the dynamic capacity of responsible innovation of this SME and its global performance, namely the economic components (productivity gains, improvement of the service to the client, reputation effect), social (improvement of the working conditions, skills development), environmental (limitation to the source of the impacts, protection of biodiversity) and personal components for the entrepreneur (quality of life, collaborators’ esteem, dissemination of experience through a book). This article shows the possible existence of a global performance, this nuances the arguments of Capron and Quairel (2006). The use of a single case implies to remain modest on the lessons to be learned. However, the case of Pocheco seems to be able to inspire others still mostly risk-averse business leaders to engage more strongly in the way of responsible management. At a time when well-being at work has an impact on both approaches, it seems relevant to revisit the dominant thought patterns based on a frantic quest for short-term profit. |
