Summary, etc. Summary, etc. | Managing People Who are Pathologically Resistant to Authority We all know that supervising a team involves dealing with employees who have very different personalities. However, some subordinates are in the habit of systematically contesting authority, regardless of the nature or relevance of what is being asked of them. It is not always easy to understand why some people adopt this type of conduct and how to manage them adequately. What should managers who find themselves in such a situation do? In this article, we first explain the notion of personality disorder. We then go on to describe the four types of personality disorders that involve a systematic contesting of authority, namely paranoid, narcissistic, antisocial and passive-aggressive personality disorders. Next, we identify four key principles that managers should keep in mind when confronted with these types of personalities. Finally, adopting a behavioural approach, we offer managers advice on attitudes and actions they can adopt to effectively manage employees exhibiting these four types of personality disorders. |
