| Summary, etc. | Michèle Riot-Sarcey, à l’aide du Livre des Passages, esquisse une grille de lecture discontinue du xixe siècle. Cheminant dans trois chapitres de l’ouvrage de Benjamin – Saint-Simon, chemins de fer, Fourier, et le Mouvement social –, nous voyons se dessiner un devenir inachevé du xixe siècle : entre pensées du possible et événements advenus ; entre révolution industrielle et utopie fouriériste, les éclats d’un mouvement ouvrier disparate ressurgissent des décombres de la philosophie du progrès. Des barrières aux barricades ; d’Eugène Buret à Lacenaire ; des Vésuviennes au Crédit mobilier des frères Pereire, tout un bric-à-brac parisien, jusqu’alors enfoui sous les doctrines, forme, en quelque sorte, le mouvement de l’histoire dont on aurait oublié la pluralité du sens. |

| Summary, etc. | Through the Arcades project, Michèle Riot-Sarcey has sketched a discontinuous understanding of the 19th Century. As she progresses through three chapters of Benjamin’s book, Saint-Simon, railroads, Fourier and the Social Movement, we begin to see the unfinished future of the 19th Century : from ideas of what is possible to actual events, from the industrial revolution to the Fourierist utopia, the shards of a disparate working class movement reemerges from the fragments of the Theory of Progress. From barriers to barricades, from Eugène Buret to Lacenaire, from the Vesuviennes to the Crédit mobilier of the Pereire brothers, a manifold Parisian clutter that had been buried under so many doctrines somehow forms the movement of history, which, we may have forgotten, embodies the multiplicity of meaning. |
