| Summary, etc. | Cet article analyse les conditions d’émergence et de succès de la loterie dans le monde germanophone aux xve et xvie siècles. Le « pot de fortune » apparaît comme un phénomène municipal, foncièrement lié, en Allemagne, à l’organisation des concours de tir d’arbalète et d’arquebuse. En comparant les données issues de nombreuses archives municipales, l’article met en évidence l’adoption puis la diffusion rapide du modèle au cours des années 1460, mais également l’essoufflement de l’organisation de ces spectacles publics au siècle suivant. Il en reconstitue les logiques économiques, l’événement devant à la fois rentabiliser les dépenses de prestige du conseil municipal, et attirer un grand nombre de mises. La loterie, événement local reposant néanmoins sur d’importantes mises de la part d’investisseurs lointains, est pour le pouvoir municipal une occasion de défendre le renom de la ville et de réactiver les liens de solidarité et de voisinage grâce à la collaboration étroite et une communication transparente. L’organisation de la loterie, depuis son annonce jusqu’à son tirage, permet d’entrevoir l’enthousiasme, ou le scepticisme d’une partie de la société vis-à-vis de ce spectacle urbain, et plus largement d’étudier la réception et l’utilité sociale des jeux d’argent dans la cité pré-moderne. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper analyses the emergence and the success of lotteries in the German-speaking areas during the 15th and 16th centuries. The “fortune pot” was a municipally controlled phenomenon, fundamentally related to crossbow or handgun shooting festivals. Thanks to a comparison within numerous municipal archives, this paper can thus reconstruct how the lottery was adopted in Germany during the 1460s, and became a trending phenomenon until the late 16th century. The article enables to analyse the economical logics, since the event had to bail out the prestigious expenses of the festival, and simultaneously to attract numerous bets. The lottery was not a merely local event, but rested on the participation of near and far bettors. Another stake was then how the city could defend its reputation and reactivate the bonds of solidary and good neighbourhood thanks to the collaboration and a transparent communication with its partners. From the announcement to the final results, the positive or mitigated reception of this urban spectacle is also a convenient way to apprehend the legitimate games and their use for the whole premodern urban society. |
