| Summary, etc. | Membre de l’une des plus grandes lignées de bourreaux en France, Claude-Antoine Chrétien (1767-1849), successivement en poste à Chalon-sur-Saône puis à Lyon, a laissé derrière lui de nombreux documents sur l’exercice de son métier, doublé d’une activité de guérisseur, et plus de 140 actes notariés. L’examen de ces pièces permet de retracer son parcours et surtout ses investissements, de plus en plus amples au fur et à mesure de son enrichissement. Parvenu à la tête d’un patrimoine foncier de plus de 140 hectares et d’une fortune d’au moins 170000 francs, il s’inscrit dès lors parmi la bourgeoisie lyonnaise et rejoint le niveau de vie des derniers Sanson, bourreaux de Paris aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Son cas permet ainsi, et pour la première fois, d’étudier les affaires et le rang social des exécuteurs des hautes œuvres, trop souvent décrits comme des personnages en prise avec la pauvreté. |

| Summary, etc. | Claude-Antoine Chrétien, a member of one of the longest line of executioners in France, successively stationed in Chalon and then in Lyon, left behind more than 140 notarial deeds and numerous documents on the exercise of his profession coupled with an occupation of healer. The examination of this evidence allows us to retrace his life and career and especially his investments which grew as his enrichment. Having become the owner of a land estate of over 140 hectares with a fortune of at least 170000 francs, he became part of the Lyon’s bourgeoisie and reached the standard of living of the last Sansons, the Paris executioners in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His case, thus allows, for the first time, to study the affairs and the social ranking of public executioners, too often described as characters stricken with poverty. |
