| Summary, etc. | Les anthropologues restent en retrait dans le débat académique sur le populisme, pourtant leur contribution est fondamentale car ils ont fait des peuples, dans leur multiplicité, l’objet même de leur expertise scientifique. Revenir sur leur implication initiale dans ce débat permet de comprendre leur embarras actuel. Ancré dans l’horizon libéral, ce « concept » n’a cessé de faire l’objet d’investissement politique au sein même de la sphère académique. Conceptualisé par des sociologues américains en référence au maccarthysme, le populisme a assumé une connotation négative qui est aujourd’hui contestée. La normativité libérale inhérente à ce concept contrevient à la démarche des anthropologues qui cherchent au contraire à soustraire de leurs descriptions toutes formes de jugements pour rendre compte de la réalité à partir des catégories des acteurs. Néanmoins, ils ont mis à profit les hypothèses concernant le substrat paranoïaque du populisme. En s’efforçant d’incarner la volonté populaire, les leaders populistes tendent à substantialiser le peuple à travers des mises en scène corporelles qui explicitent un attachement physique à la nation et à ses caractéristiques. Cette tendance est également perceptible dans les populismes progressistes. Les anthropologues doivent s’efforcer, aujourd’hui comme par le passé, de révéler ces processus de substantialisation de la citoyenneté et d’ossification de la démocratie. |

| Summary, etc. | Anthropologists remain in the background in the academic debate on populism, yet their contribution is fundamental, as their expertise concentrates on the study of population groups in their multiple forms. Going back to their initial involvement in this debate allows us to understand their current discomfort. Structured by a liberal perspective, this “concept” has continually been the object of political investments within the academic sphere itself. Conceptualized by American sociologists in reference to McCarthyism, populism has been given a negative connotation that is now contested. The liberal normativity inherent in this concept contradicts the approach of anthropologists who, on the contrary, seek to remove all forms of judgement from their descriptions in order to account for reality on the basis of the categories which those involved use. However, they have taken advantage of the hypotheses regarding the paranoid substratum of populism. In striving to embody the popular will, populist leaders tend to substantialize the people through bodily displays that make explicit a physical attachment to the nation and its characteristics. This trend is also perceptible in the progressive forms of populism. Anthropologists must strive, today as in the past, to reveal these processes of the substantialization of citizenship and the ossification of democracy. |
