Summary, etc. | This paper presents evidence from a laboratory experiment comparing different incentive mechanisms for team work: centralized (target-based and team tournament) and decentralized (peer-pressure), or revenue sharing, which constitutes our baseline treatment. We observe free-riding in the baseline treatment, albeit not as severe as theoretically-predicted. Peer pressure partly limits free-riding but is costly for workers. Target-based schemes lead to near-Pareto levels of effort and high firms’ profits but provide relatively lower workers’ payoffs. Finally, team tournaments generate high efforts but also high payoff inequalities among workers. |

Summary, etc. | Cet article présente une expérience en laboratoire comparant différents mécanismes d’incitation à l’effort pour le travail en équipe : des mécanismes centralisés (objectifs d’équipe ou tournois entre équipes) ou décentralisés (pression des pairs). En l’absence de mécanismes incitatifs, nous observons des comportements de passager clandestin mais moindres que prédit par la théorie. La pression des pairs réduit ces comportements opportunistes mais est socialement coûteuse. Les objectifs d’équipe génèrent des niveaux d’efforts proches de l’optimum et des profits élevés pour les firmes mais des gains faibles pour les travailleurs. Les tournois entre équipes engendrent des efforts élevés mais de fortes inégalités de gains entre travailleurs. Classification JEL : J33, C92. |
