| Summary, etc. | Le plus ancien document des archives des seigneurs de Picquigny (Fr., dép. Somme) est un rouleau intitulé Super militibus, datable des années 1190, dans lequel sont énumérés les noms, les services et les fiefs de 125 vassaux liés par l’hommage au sire Enguerran (Paris, AN, R1 675/1). De cet écrit exceptionnel, rapidement analysé en 1968 par Robert Fossier, qui y a vu l’indice d’une féodalisation tardive et un peu artificielle de l’espace picard, la présente étude propose une interprétation nouvelle, diamétralement opposée à celle du regretté médiéviste. Le rôle Super militibus, très focalisé sur les services de garnison dus au sire par ses principaux vassaux, en particulier par un groupe d’une trentaine de gardiens « permanents » de la forteresse de Picquigny, témoigne en réalité de l’ancienneté de cette organisation militaire, de sa déliquescence après le milieu du xiie siècle et des efforts déployés par l’entourage du sire pour en sauvegarder les principales modalités. Le recours à l’écrit – assez neuf en milieu seigneurial – vise ici à figer un état de choses traditionnel, non à infléchir le réel dans un sens nouveau. | Summary, etc. | The Super militibus Roll from the Lordship of Picquigny (1192/1199): rescuing an endangered castellan society with the written word?The oldest document preserved in the archive of the Lords of Picquigny (France, dep. Somme) is a roll entitled Super militibus, dating back to the 1190s ; it records the names, services and fiefs of some 125 vassals who had paid homage to the Lord Enguerran (Paris, AN, R1 675/1). This remarkable text was briefly commented on in 1968 by Robert Fossier, who regarded it as a sign of a late and somewhat artificial feudalization of the Picardy region. The present study offers a renewed interpretation which completely reverses the late French medievalist’s view. The Super militibus roll, being very focused on the castle-guard obligations owed to the lord by his main vassals, and especially by a staff of some thirty « permanent » guardians of the Picquigny fortress, actually bears testimony to the longstanding existence of this military organisation, to its decline from the mid-twelfth century onwards, as well as to the efforts exerted by the lord’s entourage to safeguard its core features. Here, the use of literacy – a relatively new attitude in this lay environment – is aimed at preserving a customary state of affairs, not at creating a new reality.
