| Summary, etc. | Le site baptisé Waldam 3, situé sur l’estran à Marck (Pas-de-Calais) est découvert au printemps 2014 à la faveur du désensablement de la plage. Il prend alors la forme d’un amoncellement de galets, tessons de verre et de céramique, au sein duquel sont prélevés quelques artefacts plus complets. Après une rapide expertise, qui permet de confirmer l’intérêt du site et du mobilier, une opération de sondage est programmée à la faveur des grandes marées du mois d’avril 2015. Il s’agit d’identifier d’éventuels vestiges de coque et de qualifier l’intérêt archéologique du gisement.Le mobilier préservé comble en partie le manque d’informations induit par l’absence de structure navale et permet d’avancer des hypothèses quant à la nature et à la chronologie du site. Les cinq fragments de bordages découverts indiquent que nous sommes en présence des restes d’une épave de navire dont le tonnage pourrait être compris entre 150 et 250 tonneaux. La présence d’un octant renvoie à un bateau destiné à la navigation hauturière et le mobilier céramique tend à indiquer un navire de commerce doté d’une petite cargaison. L’étude du mobilier permet également de montrer que le navire a fait naufrage entre 1787 et les années 1810. Par ailleurs, le faciès global du mobilier encourage à interpréter le site comme un navire provenant des îles britanniques. La comparaison avec les mentions de naufrage connues dans les archives permet de proposer, à titre d’hypothèse, plusieurs candidats pour l’identification de l’épave Waldam 3. |

| Summary, etc. | Waldam 3, Marck (Pas-de-Calais) : investigation of the remains of a merchant vessel lost at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuriesThe site known as Waldam 3, located on the foreshore at Marck (Pas-de-Calais), was discovered in spring 2014 thanks to the desilting of the beach. The site of interest takes the form of a pile of pebbles, shards of glass and ceramics, from which some more complete artefacts were collected. After a quick assessment, which confirmed the general potential of the site, a survey operation was scheduled during the high tides of April 2015. The aim was to identify possible hull remains and to define the archaeological character of the deposit.The preserved artefacts partly fill the information gap arising from the absence of a surviving maritime structure and allow hypotheses to be forwarded regarding the nature and chronology of the site. Five plank fragments recovered indicate that we are dealing with the remains of a shipwreck with a possible tonnage of between 150 and 250 tons. The presence of an octant demonstrates a vessel intended for offshore navigation and the ceramic finds suggest this to have been a commercial vessel with a small cargo. The study of the finds also shows that the ship sank between 1787 and the 1810s. In addition, the overall composition of the items recovered enables the site to be interpreted as representing the remains from a British vessel. Comparison with the shipwreck records known in the archives makes it possible to propose, as a hypothesis, several candidates for the identification of the Waldam 3 wreck. |
