| Summary, etc. | De la réussite de la mise bas, moment particulièrement dangereux, dépendent la rentabilité et la pérennité d’un élevage, qu’il soit tourné vers la production de viande ou de lait. Face aux accidents qui se produisent lors des mises bas (abandon ou mort du petit, mort de la mère ou insuffisance de lactation…), dans de nombreuses cultures les éleveurs déploient un arsenal de techniques, fondées à la fois sur une connaissance fine du comportement et de la physiologie de leurs animaux, mais aussi sur la ruse. Ce sont ces manipulations du corps des mères et des nouveau-nés, destinées à nouer des liens entre eux et à amener les femelles – brebis, vaches ou chamelles – à « donner leur lait », qui sont l’objet de cet article. Il s’appuie sur des enquêtes menées dans le sud de la France, au Maghreb et en Afrique de l’ouest, ainsi que sur une recherche documentaire. |

| Summary, etc. | The profitabilty and sustainability of breeding depend on the especially perillous moment of dropping, be it for the purpose of producing meat or milk. Faced with accidents that occur during births (abandonment or death of the young, death of the mother or insufficiency of lactation…), in numerous cultures breeders dispose of an arsenal of techniques, based at once on an intimate knowledge of the behavior and the physiology of their animals, but also on guile. These manipulations of the body of the mother and the new-born, intended to forge links between them and to get females - ewes, cows or she-camels – « to give their milk », are the object of this article. It draws on investigations conducted in the South of France, in the Maghreb and in Western Africa, as well as on documentary research. |
