| Summary, etc. | Au Burkina Faso, il est commun d’invoquer les « monopoles commerciaux donnés par l’État aux grands commerçants » même si, officiellement, il n’y a presque plus de monopole dans le pays. Une telle expression dénonce les rapports cachés entre les autorités politiques et les élites économiques et la manière dont ces dernières peuvent, grâce à une application plus souple de la loi à leur encontre, dominer la distribution des biens de consommation courante. Cet article interroge les compréhensions populaires de ce phénomène à partir d’entretiens réalisés dans des quartiers populaires des deux principales villes du pays, mais aussi les réponses collectives qui peuvent lui être données en revenant sur les pillages alimentaires survenus pendant l’insurrection de 2014. Ce faisant, il s’agit de se demander comment des illégalismes économiques populaires répondent ponctuellement à celui des puissants, sans que l’ordre social s’en trouve pour autant bouleversé. |

| Summary, etc. | In Burkina Faso, it is common to speak of ‘commercial monopolies granted by the state to large traders’, even though officially there are few monopolies in the country. Such an expression denounces the hidden relationship between the political authorities and the economic elites, and the way in which the latter are able to dominate the distribution of everyday consumer goods thanks to a more flexible application of law towards them. This article examines understandings of this phenomenon, based on interviews conducted in working-class neighbourhoods in the country’s two main cities, but also the collective responses that can be given to it by looking back at the food looting that occurred during the 2014 uprising. The aim is to explore how working class economic illegalisms can sometimes respond to those of the powerful without disrupting social order. |
