520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. As the name Mauritania or La Mauritanie was impressed upon what is now The Islamic Republic of Mauritania by colonial authorities, Arabophone Mauritanians often prefer to evoke the Saharan imaginary of Bilād Shinqīṭ in current cultural, literary, and historical texts. However, while Bilād Shinqīṭ is now used as a stand-in for precolonial cultural authenticity, the concept itself was originally as exogenous as La Mauritanie. This paper traces the evolution of Bilād Shinqīṭ through Arabic literary histories and argues that it was largely Aḥmad ibn al-Amīn al-Shinqīṭī (1863-1913)’s Kitāb al-Wasīṭ fī Tarājim Udabā' al-Shinqīṭ (“The Reference Book of Chinguetti Literati”, 1911) which popularized a Shinqīṭī identity, as no unitary term referring to all Ḥassānīya-speaking tribes and emirates was widely used before it.
