| Summary, etc. | Since the change of political regime in Iraq in 2003, the ziyāra of Arba‘īn, an annual pilgrimage to the tomb of Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, in Karbala, has grown massively in scale, with some 20 million people flocking to the shrine each year. The Shi‘i institutional actors that have taken over its regulation have strived to facilitate the access of the faithful to the holy sites and ensure their material well-being and safety in a particularly challenging geopolitical context. The arrangements put in place illustrate the extent to which the management of the secular aspects of major Muslim pilgrimages is dependent on sovereignty disputes over holy places. |

| Summary, etc. | Depuis le changement de régime politique en Irak en 2003, la ziyāra d’Arba‘īn, visite pieuse annuelle au tombeau de Ḥusayn ibn ‘Alī, à Karbala, en Irak, s’est massifiée pour atteindre quelque 20 millions de participants. Sa régulation incombe à présent à des acteurs institutionnels chiites qui se sont efforcés de faciliter l’accès des croyants aux lieux saints et d’assurer leur bien-être matériel et leur sécurité dans un contexte géopolitique particulièrement complexe. Les dispositifs mis en place illustrent à quel point la gestion des aspects profanes des grands pèlerinages musulmans est tributaire des concurrences de souveraineté sur les lieux saints. |
