| Summary, etc. | Les premiers Européens parvenus aux Tuamotu ont décrit une société peu hiérarchisée et subissant, dans toutes ses composantes, l’influence négative d’un environnement naturel pénalisant. Ce modèle a été largement diffusé depuis, sans que les systèmes politiques de la période des premiers contacts fassent l’objet d’études approfondies. La première partie de l’article offre une analyse du rôle des ariki (chefs), en prenant appui sur des matériaux historiques peu connus. Elle fait apparaître des figures de chefs héréditaires puissants, mais aussi la présence d’idées ou d’institutions contribuant à leur « fragilisation » et à la mobilité du pouvoir en général : l’existence de « failles » dans les règles de succession, l’obligation impérieuse du retour aux populations, notamment au travers de la reproduction de l’abondance, l’importance des formes de pouvoir acquises, etc. La seconde partie montre que certaines représentations, tenant par exemple à la « juste manière » d’être chef ou aux moyens d’exhausser son statut, continuent d’habiter la vie politique actuelle et de maintenir ces sociétés « en tension ». |

| Summary, etc. | The first Europeans to reach the Tuamotu described a slightly hierarchised society, undergoing in all fields the negative influence of a penalizing natural environment. This model was widely spread since that time, but the political systems of the first contacts period have not been studied thoroughly. The first part of the article analyzes the role of the ariki (chiefs), relying on little known historical data. It shows powerful hereditary chiefs, but also, the existence of ideas or institutions contributing to their «weakening» and to the mobility of power in general: «breaches» in the succession rules, the imperious obligation to reciprocate to people, particularly through the renewal of abundance, the importance of some achieved forms of power, etc. The second part shows that certain representations, concerning for example the «right way» of being a chief or the means to heighten one’s status, continue to exist in the current political life and to maintain these societies «in tension». |
