Summary, etc. | Many parts of Bretons’ rural lordships judicial realities at the end of the Middle Ages are still widely unknown, mainly for want of archives. In this sense, the Bois-Colombin’s Assize Register is an exceptional source. Firstly, the recovery of seigniorial authority after the Britton Succession War (1341-1364) is highlighting. Secondly, various strategies put in place by lords (and their agents) to resolve conflicts are enlightened. The assizes register enlightens a turning-point (the end of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth century) with main topic: judicial procedures, attempt to mediate in parallel procedures, appeal. Thirdly, it illuminates various pieces of the seigniorial life, with the presentation of litigation and disputes of rights, passed under silence in other seigniorial sources. Finally, the Bois-Colombin’s register makes it possible to discern some realities of the seigniorial authority just before the convulsions of the second fifteenth century, on edges of the county of Nantes and Poitou, in the “common borders” with Poitou, where seigniorial authority is shared. This article proposes to question some subtile balance by studying the exercise of justice. |
