Summary, etc. In 1405, Christine de Pizan had already read Honorat Bovet’s L’Arbre des batailles ( The Tree of Battles), which she used now and then in L’Advision Cristine. Five years later, she made extensive use of it to write books III and IV of the Livre des faits d’armes et de chevalerie. In both cases, the writer had a copy of Bovet’s work to hand. This contribution attempts to trace the influences and the material model used by Christine de Pizan. With regard to the textual variations of the different families of L’Arbre des batailles identified so far, Christine de Pizan’s lessons in L’Advision and the Livre des faits d’armes indicate that she used a single model throughout, probably derived from group 1A of the manuscript tradition of L’Arbre des batailles. Nonetheless, the iconography of one of the two original manuscripts of the Livre des faits d’armes (Paris, BnF, ms. fr. 603) suggests that the writer also had access to another copy of L’Arbre des batailles, the role of which remains to be clarified.
