520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The study of medieval art in recent decades has taken a decidedly anthropological turn, leading to greater focus on image efficacy, especially concerning devotional imagery. That shift has more recently brought about renewed study of works’ agency, their materiality, and even their ontological status. The importance of that work notwithstanding, the goal of the present essay is to refocus attention on medieval art’s inefficaciousness, a quality that recent turn has neglected. After reviewing twelfth-century ideas toward doubt and visual discernment, the article examines several cases for which, on the one hand, the artifice of representation fails (in essence laying bare the artifice, rendering the work inefficacious) and, on the other, the work anticipates doubts concerning its representational claims. These examples show how images can engage doubt and call into question notions of efficacy. The article therefore argues for an inclusive approach to medieval art that takes into consideration the precariousness of spectators’ credulity and also the means by which artists, anticipating a certain degree of doubt, might have developed responses to parry that doubt.
