| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe Fonds de la comtesse de Dufferin, ou Association nationale d’aide médicale aux femmes indiennes, a été fondé en 1885 par Lady Dufferin, vice-reine des Indes. Institué pour dispenser des connaissances et une aide médicales aux Indiennes en finançant la formation d’un personnel médical féminin et en encourageant la construction d’hôpitaux pour les femmes et les enfants, le Fonds Dufferin révèle les liens qui, dans le domaine de la médecine féminine, rattachaient la Grande-Bretagne au joyau de ses colonies. Persuadés que les femmes hindoues et musulmanes ne feraient jamais appel à des médecins hommes, les Britanniques usèrent de cet argument pour offrir à leurs compatriotes de sexe féminin des possibilités d’étudier la médecine et de l’exercer, dans les colonies comme en métropole. Bien que théoriquement indépendant, le Fonds Dufferin a défendu les intérêts du gouvernement colonial britannique, lequel s’attribua le mérite de ses réalisations et présenta comme des bienfaits du pouvoir colonial l’introduction de la médecine moderne et les améliorations apportées au statut des femmes. |

| Summary, etc. | The politics of gender and medicine in Colonial India: The Countess of Dufferin’s Fund, 1885-1888The Countess of Dufferin’s Fund, or the National Association for Supplying Female Medical Aid to the Women of India, was established in 1885 by Lady Dufferin, vicereine of India. Set up to provide medical knowledge and aid to Indian women by financing the training of female medical personnel and promoting the construction of hospitals for women and children, the Dufferin Fund reveals the ideological and structural links between Great Britain and her jewel colony in the arena of women’s medicine. The English belief that Hindu and Muslim women would not see male physicians became a key argument in promoting opportunities for British women in medical education and employment, in the colonies and at home. Although formally independent, the fund advanced the interests of the British colonial government, which took credit for the fund’s accomplishments and cited modern medicine and improvement in the status of women as benefits of colonial rule. |
