| Summary, etc. | En janvier 2016, le gouvernement israélien présentait un projet d’aménagement d’un espace cultuel où hommes et femmes juifs pourraient prier ensemble dans une zone excentrée du Mur des Lamentations, zone non régie par les autorités orthodoxes. Ce « compromis » du Mur censé mettre fin au long combat d’un groupe de féministes juives religieuses désireuses de pouvoir prier publiquement au Mur (les Femmes du Mur), permettait également de reconnaître territorialement et symboliquement l’existence et l’influence d’un judaïsme libéral en quête d’affirmation dans le pays. Ce sont en effet les autorités juives orthodoxes qui sont en charge, depuis la création de l’État et surtout depuis la conquête de Jérusalem, en 1967, de l’administration du Mur et de sa partition genrée. Dans cet espace réaménagé comme une synagogue orthodoxe, femmes et hommes ne prient pas ensemble (installation et construction d’une Mehitza) et la prière des femmes est reléguée à une prière privée, seuls les hommes étant habilités à conduire une prière publique. |

| Summary, etc. | In January, 2016, the Israeli government presented a project to create a space at the Wailing Wall where Jewish men and women could pray together. This space was to be off to the side, in an area not controlled by the Orthodox authorities. It was hoped that this « compromise » would bring to an end the long battle of the group of religious Jewish women (the Women of the Wall) who sought to pray publicly at the Wall. The decision would also entail symbolic and territorial recognition of the influence of Liberal Judaism which has long been seeking legitimacy in Israel. Since the founding of the state, and particularly since Jerusalem’s capture in 1967, Orthodox Jewish authorities have been in charge of the Wall and enforced gender segregation there. The space in front of the Wall has been turned into an Orthodox synagogue where men and women pray separately, divided by a Mehitza. Women are, furthermore, relegated to private prayer; only men are allowed to pray publicly. |
