| Summary, etc. | Sorrentino's interest in forms has often prompted him to structure his books according to self-imposed constraints. Gold Fools, following the trails of American myth and history, tells, exclusively through interrogative sentences, the hilarious and improbable adventure of three boys lost in the western wilderness. This demanding and frustrating formal choice blurs all images and generates myriad potentialities. Stripped of metaphoric substance, the novel becomes a self-propelling clatter of signifiers that foregrounds the nature and reliability of language. The challenge is ultimately rewarding inasmuch as it produces new literary material: the virtual novel. |
