| Summary, etc. | RésuméLa construction sexuée du vieillissement situe la ménopause tant comme porte d’entrée que comme clôture sur une vieillesse déficitaire, sous l’emprise des modélisations biomédicales. Étudiées en Amérique du Nord et en Europe principalement, ces mises aux normes du corps des femmes — avant, pendant et après la ménopause — allient les pathologisations aux modes de prévention comme le démontrent les résultats de l’analyse des journaux scientifiques. Les publications des recherches féministes apportent la controverse à ces représentations et aux pratiques qui l’accompagnent, démontrant le traitement différentiel du vieillissement masculin et féminin et les rapports sociaux de sexe sous-jacents à ces formes de médicalisation. S’il en résulte une certaine déstigmatisation de la ménopause, de nouvelles injonctions semblent se renforcer, sollicitant simultanément l’autodiscipline des corps contre le poids économique des vieilles femmes potentiellement à charge et le maintien de leurs éternelles jeunesse et féminité. |

| Summary, etc. | The menopause in scienceThe gendered construction of ageing situates the menopause either as a beginning or as an ending of a sub-form of ageing, shaped by biomedical models. Studied mainly in North America and in Europe, this normativisation of women’s bodies (before, during and after the menopause) brings together the pathological studies with forms of prevention as is shown by the results of an analysis of scientific journals. The publication of feminist research challenges these models and the practice which accompanies them, demonstrating the different treatment of masculine and feminine ageing, and gender relations underlying these forms of medicalization. While the result is a certain destigmatising of the menopause, new demands seems to reinforce it, requiring both a self-discipline of the body against the potential economic burden of responsibility for old women and the maintenance of their eternal youth and femininity. |
