Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Gender studies and film studiesNoting the resistance of film studies to gender studies in France, this article shows the link between “cinephilia” — a French invention — and a masculine vision of creation, glorifying a formalist aesthetic and a masculine pantheon of masculine auteurs. Gender studies on the other hand, which are in full swing in English-speaking countries, highlight the gendered dimension of film production and the relations of domination that exist in the sector. Creation of the 1970s, this field of research offers a critical analysis of Hollywood cinema, a rediscovery of women film-makers and of genres addressed to women, first in the cinema and then in television, and advocates giving renewed attention to sex and gender identities and relations in audiovisual representation and in their reception. |
