Summary, etc. | Réalisé en 1932, à la fin d’une période prolifique de représentations du premier conflit mondial sur les écrans soviétiques, Okraïna scelle la rencontre entre un réalisateur original régulièrement attaqué par la critique et marginalisé et le genre « historico-révolutionnaire » imposé aux studios soviétiques par le régime. Le film fédère le public soviétique et occidental, sensible à l’inventivité du cinéaste qui a choisi de placer la focale à l’arrière et sur les petits riens du quotidien de guerre. Dans un contexte d’apogée du pacifisme européen nourri par une intense circulation de textes et de films, le premier film sonore de Barnet est une réussite esthétique qui remporte le succès public et critique en URSS comme en Occident. Sa singularité au sein de la production mondiale traitant de la Grande Guerre en fait l’une des œuvres les plus marquantes de l’époque et explique qu’il ait été projeté à toutes les époques. |

Summary, etc. | Made in 1932, at the end of a prolific period of representation of the first world conflict on Soviet screens, Okraïna sealed the meeting between an original director regularly attacked by critics and marginalized and the “historical-revolutionary” genre imposed on Soviet studios by the regime. The film unites Soviet and Western audiences, sensitive to the inventiveness of the filmmaker who has chosen to focus on the back and on the little things of everyday life during the war. In a context of the height of European pacifism fuelled by an intense circulation of texts and films, Barnet’s first sound film was an aesthetic success that won public and critical acclaim in the USSR and the West. Its uniqueness within the world production dealing with the Great War makes it one of the most outstanding works of the time and explains why it has been screened at all times. |
