Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The material of male powerThe newspaper compositor is a classic case of the male craft worker, subordinate in relation to the capitalist press owner, yet strongly trade unionized, respected member of the skilled working class and proud earner of a « family wage ». Recently the occupation has undergone dramatic technological change initiated by employers, threatening craft control. The paper analyses this struggle over computerized photocomposition as a process contributing to the formation of people within relations of class and gender simultaneously. The author argues for a fuller conception of the material basis of male power which, in concentrating upon the economic, does not lose sight of its physical and socio-political ramifications. The appropriation of muscle, manual skill, tools and machinery by men, an important source of working class strength in relation to capital, is part of the process by which females are constituted as subordinate. |
