| Summary, etc. | RésuméDans un texte publié peu avant sa mort, Hicks reformule des idées qu’ils avaient exprimées dès 1942. Il affirme, d’une manière provocante, que la période entre Smith et Keynes constitue une sorte d"’Age noir" pour l’analyse économique. Il affirme aussi que Smith et ses prédécesseurs appartiennent à la même famille d’économistes que Keynes. Pour étayer cette affirmation, il montre qu’il y a chez les prédécesseurs de Smith des multiplicateurs de type keynésien. En revanche, il n’arrive pas à en trouver un chez Smith. Dans cet article, nous montrons qu’il existe bien un multiplicateur smithien et nous en tirons les leçons. |

| Summary, etc. | In an article published just before he died, Hicks states ideas that he had already set out in 1942. He affirms, in a very provocative manner, that the period between Smith and Keynes is a kind of "Dark Age". He also affirms that Smith, like his predecessors, and Keynes belong to the same family of economists. To demonstrate those two statements, he shows that Smith’s predecessors had multipliers of the Keynesian type. However he tries in vain to find such a multiplier in Smith’s work. In this paper, we show that there is a Smithian multiplier, thence, we draw some lessons. Classification JEL : B110, B120, B220 |
