| Summary, etc. | Cet article retrace l’histoire de l’usine de production d’aluminium fondée en 1908 à Martigny, dans le canton du Valais en Suisse, par l’entreprise Gebrüder Giulini GmbH. Déterminée par le souci de garantir des débouchés pour sa production d’alumine, l’entreprise chimique a procédé à des choix de localisation caractéristiques de l’époque pionnière de la production d’aluminium en Europe. L’article s’attache à comprendre comment le site de Martigny est parvenu au cours du XXe siècle à maintenir une activité dans le domaine de la production et de la transformation de l’aluminium, en dépit d’une évolution globale de la branche qui lui était défavorable et d’un milieu local de plus en plus rétif aux nuisances provoquées par cette activité industrielle. Cette adaptation a nécessité l’accroissement de la productivité, la compression des effectifs, une indépendance grandissante par rapport au groupe Gebrüder Giulini GmbH et des concessions dans le domaine de la santé des travailleurs et de la préservation de l’environnement. Les difficultés financières croissantes et l’échec de la stratégie de positionnement sur des marchés de niche ont déterminé finalement la fermeture de l’usine d’aluminium de Martigny en 2001. |

The History of a Swiss Aluminium Plant in MartignyThis article tells the story of the factory of aluminium founded in 1908 in Martigny, in the canton of Valais in Switzerland, by the company Gebrüder Giulini GmbH. Aiming first at selling its production of alumina, the chemical company made a location decision typical of the pioneering days of aluminium manufacturing in Europe. The article endeavours to understand how the Martigny plant succeeded in maintaining an activity in the field of aluminium production and transformation throughout the 20th century, despite an unfavourable evolution of the sector and a local environment that happened to be always more recalcitrant to the pollution caused by its industrial activity. Martigny adaptated through an increased productivity, the drastic reduction of its employees, a growing independence towards the Gebrüder Giulini GmbH group, and concessions for the health of workers and the preservation of the environment. Major financial difficulties and the failure of the niche market strategy eventually caused the closure of the Martigny plant in 2001. |
