| Summary, etc. | Cet article analyse la carrière de Paul Girod, fondateur des usines électrométallurgiques d’Ugine, toujours en activité aujourd’hui. Paul Girod appartient à la première génération d’ingénieurs qui, à la fin du XIXe siècle, mettent au point les procédés de l’électrométallurgie et en assurent les premières applications industrielles. L’article retrace les différentes étapes d’une carrière d’entrepreneur au cours de laquelle Paul Girod a dû mettre en œuvre des compétences variées et inégalement maîtrisées, depuis la recherche en laboratoire jusqu’à la gestion financière. Il a su mobiliser autour de ses entreprises des soutiens nombreux dans les milieux d’affaires suisses, puis parisiens, et enfin dans les milieux gouvernementaux français. Il a voulu mettre en œuvre une politique paternaliste qui s’est parfois heurtée à une réticence du milieu local uginois. Enfin, l’évolution générale du secteur de l’électrométallurgie, marquée par un mouvement de concentration, a conduit à sa mise à l’écart au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale. |

Paul Girod belonged to the first generation of engineers who developed the technical processes of electrometallurgy and implemented their first industrial applications. The article follows the steps of Girod’s career. Paul Girod had to demonstrate various skills that he did not always master - from laboratory research to financial management. He knew how to mobilize around his companies many supports in the Swiss and then Parisian business circles, and finally in French government circles. He wanted to implement a paternalistic policy that sometimes came up against the reluctance of the Ugine local environment. Finally, the overall evolution of the electrometallurgical industry towards a growing concentration ostracized him in the years following the First World War. |
