| Summary, etc. | The major fires in the Gironde region in the summer of 2022 highlighted the shortcomings of the Landes de Gascogne forest-management and fire-prevention systems. They highlighted the vulnerability of this maritime pine forest, created under Napoleon III, and now the object of criticism from scientists, ecologists and new residents alike. At issue: its high flammability, low biodiversity and proximity to homes. For their part, foresters are developing surveillance technology, firewall maintenance and subcontracting to cooperatives in a new context of forest financialization. |
