| Summary, etc. | La création de la société holding pure Pechiney Ugine Kuhlmann (PUK) au début des années 1970 donne naissance à un mastodonte industriel composé d’une société mère détenant une kyrielle de participations et contrôlant un nombre élevé de filiales. En s’appuyant sur les archives de PUK, l’article cherche à savoir si la création de ce géant industriel a été suivie par la mise en place d’une structure dédiée à la gestion du groupe et si de nouveaux dispositifs de gestion ont été introduits. L’examen des archives montre que la Direction générale de PUK accorde une importance toute particulière à une direction fonctionnelle, celle de l’audit et des comptes consolidés. Rapidement doté de moyens informatiques visant à automatiser les procédures de consolidation et renforcé en effectif, le Service des comptes consolidés fournit à la Direction générale l’information comptable et financière consolidée dont elle a besoin pour disposer d’une vue globale des activités du groupe. Il produit à cet effet un document de synthèse orignal, dit la « brochure grise », qui compile l’ensemble des données comptables à l’échelle du groupe. L’article décrit et analyse le contenu de la « brochure grise » afin de mettre en évidence sa qualité de dispositif de gestion à l’usage restreint des principaux dirigeants du groupe PUK. |

| Summary, etc. | The creation of the pure holding company Pechiney Ugine Kuhlmann (PUK) in the early 1970’s gave rise to an industrial colossus comprised of a parent company that held a myriad of interests and controlled a great number of subsidiaries. Drawing from PUK’s archives, the article seeks to ascertain whether the creation of this industrial giant was followed by the setup of a dedicated structure for the group’s management and whether new management mechanisms were introduced. Study of the archives shows that PUK’s executive management attached special importance to a support service: the Audit and consolidated accounts department. This department was soon given computer resources to make consolidation procedures automatic, as well as additional personnel. It provided executive management with the consolidated accounting and financial information needed to see the big picture of the group’s activities. For that purpose, it produced an original overview document, the “grey brochure,” which compiled all accounting data across the group. The article describes and analyses the contents of the “grey brochure” in order to highlight its quality as a management tool for restricted use by the principal executives of the PUK group. |
