Summary, etc. The aim of this research is to show that the link between perceived cultural distance and prejudice against immigrants depends on the preference for different integration models. We present two studies: a survey and an experimental study. In the survey, native French people filled measures of perception of cultural distance between immigrant groups and the French majority group, of preference for different integration models (assimilation, multiculturalism) and of prejudices against immigrants. The results show a positive relationship between perceived cultural distance and prejudice against groups. This link is moderated by the preference for different models of integration: for French people who prefer assimilation over multiculturalism, perception of an important cultural distance is associated with a higher level of prejudice against immigrants. This link is weaker for French people who prefer multiculturalism over assimilation. In the experimental study, we manipulated the integration model via a text and an argumentation in favor of one of the relevant ideologies. Results show that for the participants in the “multiculturalism” condition, the link between cultural distance and prejudice is reversed or decreases compared to the «assimilation» condition, excepting for North Africans and Sub-Saharan Africans. We discuss the specificity of the intercultural relations in France.
