| Summary, etc. | RésuméUn événement vécu par une génération est toujours transmis aux suivantes à travers les symbolisations qui en ont été réalisées. Lorsque l’événement a été correctement symbolisé, la transmission passe à la fois par des mots – c‘est à dire par des récits – des images partagées ou privilégiées, et des formes sensori-motrices de symbolisation comme des rites et des fêtes. Mais lorsque cette symbolisation est imparfaite, l’événement est symbolisé seulement à travers certaines catégories, notamment des mimiques et des gestes. Le problème est que ceux-ci restent énigmatiques car l’événement n’a pas reçu de traduction verbale explicite. Très souvent, ces commémorations mystérieuses sont en outre douloureuses. La transmission proprement dite est bloquée. En revanche, un autre mécanisme apparaît : la génération suivante peut s’emparer de ces miettes de symbolisation pour tenter de symboliser totalement ce qui ne l’a été qu’imparfaitement à la génération précédente. Cette tentative peut être consciente, mais elle est aussi souvent inconsciente. On peut dire alors que la symbolisation partielle fait « ricochet » sur les suivantes. |

| Summary, etc. | An event experienced by one generation is invariably transmitted to following generations through the symbolizations constructed out of such events. When the event has been correctly symbolized, transmission occurs both verbally – that is through talking about it – and through shared, privileged images, as well as taking on sensorimotor forms of symbolization, such as rites and celebrations. But when this symbolization is less than perfect, the event is symbolized only through certain categories, particularly through facial expressions and gestures. The problem is that these remain enigmatic, since the event has not benefited from explicit verbal translation. Very often, these commemorations, shrouded in mystery, are also painful. True transmission is blocked. However, another mechanism emerges : the next generation can take possession of these “crumbs” of symbolization to try to fully symbolize what was only partially realised by the preceding generation. This attempt may be conscious, but it is often unconscious. One can then say that partial symbolization “rebounds” on following generations. |
