Summary, etc. A consensus appears in scientific publications on adult education, on management, as well as in international organisations reports today: “soft skills” are considered as more and more important for employability. However, the English syntagm “soft skills” has variable translations, and whatever the language, there is no agreement on what is thus designated: taxonomies vary between researchers and fields; frameworks are shaped differently; the proposed forms and methods of assessment are multiple. What are we discussing exactly? How can we reliably assess the components of employability? These are the main questions to which this article proposes to provide a theoretical answer, by revisiting fifty years of research.

Summary, etc. On constate aujourd’hui, dans les publications en sciences de la formation, en sciences de gestion, comme dans les rapports d’organisations internationales, un point consensuel : les soft skills sont considérées comme de plus en plus importantes pour l’employabilité des personnes. Mais le syntagme anglais soft skills a des traductions variables et, quelle que soit la langue, il n’y a pas d’accord sur ce qui est ainsi désigné : les taxonomies varient selon les chercheurs et les domaines ; les référentiels ont des formes très différentes ; les formes et les modalités d’évaluation proposées sont multiples. De quoi s’agit-il exactement ? Comment évaluer d’une manière fiable ces composantes de l’employabilité ? Telles sont les principales questions auxquelles cet article propose d’apporter une réponse théorique, en revisitant cinquante ans de travaux.
