| Summary, etc. | Using the French Navy as an example, this article looks at two problems. Firstly, it examines the difficulties historians must face when working on French nuclear deterrence, as a result of the different laws regulating and restraining access to military archives (the 2004 Heritage Code, the 2020 General Interministry Instruction [IGI 1300], the 2021 Prevention of Terrorism and Information Act, etc.). In this context, it is crucial for historians to find alternative sources, such as memoirs penned by senior officers, as well as speeches and oral testimonies given by naval officers and submariners. Secondly, we challenge a historiographical assumption about the weakness of French strategic naval thinking from the 1960s until 1976. |

| Summary, etc. | À travers l’exemple de la Marine nationale, cet article analyse deux enjeux. Le premier concerne les difficultés auxquelles est confronté l’historien travaillant sur la dissuasion nucléaire en France, occasionnées par une communication des archives militaires fortement restreinte par la législation (Code du patrimoine de 2004, IGI 1300 de 2020, loi PATR de 2021, etc.). Dans ce contexte, il est capital pour le chercheur de mettre au jour des sources alternatives, comme les écrits des hauts gradés de la marine, les discours et témoignages des surfaciers et des sous-mariniers. Le second enjeu, d’ordre historiographique, consiste à revenir sur un a priori : l’atonie de la réflexion stratégique navale française dans les années 1960-1976. |
