Summary, etc. | RésuméMalgré l’existence de la loi française du 16 novembre 2001 qui établit qu’« aucune personne ne peut être écartée d’une procédure de recrutement [...] en raison de son apparence physique », cette dernière possède, néanmoins, une valeur sur le marché du travail (Hidri 2005). Une enquête menée auprès d’étudiant(e)s en fin de formation initiale souhaitant intégrer les professions de cadre commercial montre que ces jeunes gens, plus ou moins conscients de cette valeur, développent durant leurs études des stratégies liées au travail des apparences censées faciliter leur insertion professionnelle. La concurrence sur le marché du travail peut conduire chacun(e) à emprunter, dans une sorte de ‘chassé-croisé’ des apparences, les signes et attributs distinctifs de l’autre sexe. |

Summary, etc. | The “chassé-croisé” of gendered appearances: professional insertion strategies of commercial executivesIn spite of the existence of the French law of November 16, 2001 which states that “ nobody can be excluded from a recruitment process [...] on the basis of their physical appearance”, the latter has, nevertheless, a value on the labour market. A survey carried out among final-year students aiming to become commercial executives shows these young people are more or less conscious of this value and during their studies develop strategies relating to the presentation of their appearance, intended to facilitate their professional insertion. Competition on the labour market can lead each to borrow, in a kind of “chassé-croisé” of appearances, the signs and distinctive attributes of the other sex. |
