| Summary, etc. | The growing importance given to scientific arguments, particularly neurobiological and epidemiological arguments, in the field of addiction, both in terms of clinical treatment and public policy decisions, raises the question of the place of scientific discourse in this type of debate, particularly in the face of arguments deemed to be “moral” or “ethical”. Without calling into question the fundamental nature of the scientific advances made possible by the technological progress of recent decades, the aim is to examine the distinction that is often hastily drawn between science and morality, often to the detriment of the latter. Taking the war on drugs and harm reduction as examples, we might ask whether an honest reflection on the complexity of such issues would not benefit from accepting their intrinsically ethical dimension, in order to avoid the pitfall of speaking only in terms of effectiveness and social costs, the definition of which tends to be swept under the carpet. |

| Summary, etc. | L’importance croissante accordée aux arguments scientifiques, en particulier neurobiologiques et épidémiologiques dans le champ de l’addiction, tant au niveau de la prise en charge clinique que des décisions en matière de politique publique, invite à s’interroger sur la place du discours scientifique dans ce type de débat, en particulier face à des arguments jugés « moraux » ou « éthiques ». Sans remettre en cause le caractère fondamental des avancées scientifiques permises par les progrès technologiques des dernières décennies, il s’agit de se questionner sur la distinction bien souvent hâtivement opérée entre science et morale, souvent au détriment de cette dernière. En partant des cas de la guerre à la drogue et de la réduction des risques, on peut se demander si une réflexion honnête sur la complexité de telles questions ne gagnerait pas à accepter sa dimension intrinsèquement éthique, afin d’éviter l’écueil de ne plus parler qu’en termes d’efficacité et de coûts sociaux dont la définition tend à être mise sous le tapis. |
