| Summary, etc. | Our intention is to show the sociological potentialities of the concept of archetype through the figure of the “divine trickster” in order to analyze the icon of the gangster in the global cultural industry. The proposition is that the figure of the gangster owes its persistence, significance, and power to the fact that, in the wake of the thought of Carl Gustav Jung, it is a specific psychological content that fills a pre-existing form of the collective unconscious. We will try to clarify the concepts of archetype, collective unconscious, and imaginary, as well as attempt to understand why mass culture is more willing to accommodate archetypal representations. In fact, archetypal analysis has the undoubted advantage of posing the problem of the symbolic in a manner that is not exclusively linguistic, as would be the prevailing insight of the semiotic and structuralist paradigm dominating the human sciences since the Second World War. Then, we will delve into the figure of the “divine trickster” as an archetype that can illuminate the stereotype of the North American gangster through the analysis of a number of scenes from the film The Godfather in order to show how the symbolic daytime and nighttime order intersect in this representation. We also discuss the deconstruction of this symbolic order through the TV series The Sopranos. The aim is to show how the “divine trickster” populates the contemporary iconosphere and its usefulness for the study of the imaginary dimension of mass culture. |

| Summary, etc. | Notre intention est de montrer les potentialités sociologiques de la notion d’archétype à travers la figure du « frippon divin » pour l’analyse de l’icône du gangster dans l’industrie culturelle globale. La proposition est que la figure du gangster doit sa persistance, sa signification et son pouvoir au fait qu’il s’agit, dans le sillage de la pensée de C.G. Jung, d’un contenu psychologique spécifique qui remplit une forme préexistante de l’inconscient collectif. Nous tenterons de clarifier les concepts d’archétype, d’inconscient collectif, d’imaginaire et de comprendre comment la culture de masse s’accommode des représentations archétypales. En effet, l’analyse archétypale présente l’avantage de poser le problème du symbolique d’une manière qui n’est pas exclusivement linguistique comme le voudrait le paradigme sémiotique et structuraliste qui a dominé les sciences humaines depuis la seconde guerre mondiale. Ensuite, nous nous pencherons sur la figure du « frippon divin » en tant qu’archétype susceptible d’éclairer le stéréotype du gangster nord-américain à travers l’analyse de quelques scènes du film Le Parrain pour montrer comment l’ordre symbolique diurne et nocturne s’entrecroise dans cette représentation. En outre, nous illustrerons la déconstruction de cet ordre symbolique à travers la série télévisée Sopranos. L’intention finale est de montrer comment le « frippon divin » peuple l’iconosphère contemporaine et son utilité pour l’étude de la dimension de l’imaginaire de la culture de masse. |
