520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Professional sportswomen: work of the body and gendered division of workTo be a professional sportswoman in a male sport subjects the body to a double test: mastering corporal techniques that are considered to be masculine in order to convince others of one’s professional competence and producing “feminine” performances to respond at least partially to institutional expectations. While this double constraint exists for all sportswomen involved in “masculine” sports, it is particularly strong for “professional” sportswomen who are more dependent than the others on the federations’ identity policies, aimed at maintaining the distinction between the sexes. Thus, they attempt to achieve corporal conformity, which is a more or less difficult task depending on their “inversed” gendered dispositions. This generic process does not imply homogeneity of the gender behaviour of these sportswomen. Indeed, their professional practices and ways of running their private lives vary according to their social and gender trajectories.
