520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The female robot, created to be a man’s ideal companion, is an inexhaustible theme of mythology, fantasy and science fiction. From Pygmalion’s statue to the Stepford Wives, the woman 2.0 is beautiful, obedient and sexually submissive. As such they embody a very masculine, very reductive and very prescriptive version of the feminine. Alex Garland’s 2015 film, Ex Machina, disrupts this status quo. Ava, the female AI, flees the high-tech compound in which she was conceived, but she also refuses the roles of damsel in distress, of love interest and of trophy wife. By eschewing those expectations, she exposes and denounces our overreliance on outdated narratives, which often define women as immature and dependent. This resolutely feminist film is a scathing critique of the patriarchal society, but more importantly, it condemns in no uncertain terms our complicit adherence to its archaic vision of human relations.
