| Summary, etc. | Cet article propose une lecture des théories de la firme au travers du prisme de sa taille et de ses frontières : pourquoi la firme grandit-elle ? Pourquoi cesse-t-elle de grandir en préférant une organisation en réseau ? Dans la première partie, nous revenons sur les principaux arguments relatifs à l’accroissement de la taille des firmes, tandis que dans la seconde partie nous présentons ceux relatifs à leur déconcentration et à leur organisation en réseau. Dans la troisième partie, nous étudions l’émergence et les caractéristiques des firmes réseaux et des réseaux de firme et les impacts de la diffusion de ces structures organisationnelles hybrides. Celles-ci semblent constituer une synthèse pertinente des avantages offerts tant par l’intégration (spécialisation, contrôle des actifs, économies d’échelle et de gamme) que par le marché (flexibilité de l’allocation des ressources). Le pouvoir de la firme réseau sur les marchés et les actifs matériels et immatériels qu’elle coordonne semble intact voire étendu sur une échelle géographique plus large. |

| Summary, etc. | This article proposes an analysis of the theories of the firm through the question of its size and of tits boundaries : Why does the firm grow ? Why does it stop growing preferring a networked organization ? In the first part, we come back to the main arguments explaining the growth of the firms’ size, while in the second part we present those related to their de-concentration and the building of networks. In the third part, we study the emergence and the characteristics of networked firms and the impacts of the diffusion of these hybrid organizational structures. They seem to constitute a pertinent synthesis of the advantages offered by integration (specialization, control of assets, economies of scale and of scope) and by the market (flexibility of resource allocation). The power of the networked firm on the markets and on the material and immaterial assets it coordinates seems intact or even expanded on a larger geographical scale.
