Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The social origins of maternal guiltGuilt-feelings for mothers of children with learning disabilities are well known and extensively analyzed by experts of the psyche. Sociologists have however seldom focused on this aspect of the daily care of disabled children, following a trend that makes accentuate the institutional and political dimensions rather than of the private and emotional dimensions of social phenomena. A socio-historical analysis of the social and moral construction of mental handicap however provides important elements to understand the social roots of individual feelings. We propose here to combine this approach with the study of the ethnographic case of a mother feeling twice guilty, her two eldest children having experienced school failure for uncertain reasons. To understand the guilt-feelings of this mother, which especially appear in interactions with various professionals with whom she had to deal, this article proposes to pay attention not only to these interactions, but also to long-term evolutions and social inertia. |
