| Summary, etc. | Dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle, le fard rouge d’origine végétale s’impose comme le produit emblématique d’une cosmétique renouvelée. Sa consommation est croissante et sa confection désormais proscrit l’usage des substances minérales et métalliques, identifiées comme toxiques. Plusieurs inventeurs portent le débat devant l’Académie Royale des Sciences dans les années 1770, puis devant la Société royale de médecine dans les années 1780. Leurs démarches et leurs démêlés devant les institutions savantes, leurs stratégies commerciales et publicitaires, les interventions des plus grands chimistes du temps, reconstituées en croisant les archives de différents fonds, permettent de mettre en évidence les caractéristiques de leur démarche inventive, mais surtout de souligner de véritables savoir-faire d’entrepreneurs, capables à la fois de mobiliser les ressources institutionnelles à leur disposition, de construire un discours capable de séduire le public et de profiter des possibilités offertes par le marché. | Summary, etc. | In the second half of the eighteenth century, the red makeup of plant origin is the emblematic product of a renewed cosmetics. Its consumption is increasing and its manufacture now outlaws the use of mineral and metallic substances, identified as toxic. Several inventors carry the debate before the Royal Academy of Sciences in the 1770s, then before the Royal Society of Medicine in the 1780s. Their approaches and their conflicts with learned institutions, their commercial and advertising strategies, the interventions of the greatest chemists of the time, reconstituted by crossing the archives of different funds, allow to highlight the characteristics of their inventive step, but especially to underline real entrepreneurial know-how, able to mobilize the institutional resources at their disposal, to build a discourse that can seduce the public and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the market. |
