| Summary, etc. | This article describes my ethnographical immersion in a Cameroonian administration in charge of collecting mining taxes, and my clandestine use of photography to document its agents’ work. It describes the conditions in which the images are produced, how they are used as a basis for interviews, and the ethical issues related to relations during research in the field. In this context of research conducted in a tense environment, the act of taking photos clandestinely is a tactic which allows an investigator to manage the inherent risk of the ethnographic field being closed, maintaining innocuous-seeming relations with public officials, and being able to quickly document specific aspects of what they observe. The use of these images during interviews also made it possible to create situations to discuss the tensions and informal practices underlying the relations between the public officials and mine operators. Yet regardless of its heuristic value, this practice of clandestine photography raises a deontological problem in terms of the ethnographer’s research relations. The reflexive analysis which the researcher has to conduct thus contributes to the process of ethical construction in relation to the respondents. |

| Summary, etc. | Cet article rend compte de mon immersion ethnographique dans une administration camerounaise en charge du recouvrement de la taxe minière et de l’usage clandestin de la photographie pour documenter le travail de ses agents. Il explicite les conditions de production des images, de leur usage comme support d’entretien et les enjeux éthiques qui ont émergé dans les relations d’enquête sur le terrain. Dans ce contexte de recherche sous pression, la prise de vue de façon clandestine est une tactique qui permet à l’enquêteur de gérer le risque latent de fermeture du terrain, de maintenir des relations peu suspicieuses avec les agents publics et d’enregistrer rapidement certains aspects des réalités observées. L’exploitation des images dans les situations d’entretien a également permis de générer des situations de paroles sur les tensions et les pratiques informelles sous-jacentes aux rapports des agents publics et des exploitants miniers. Mais quelle que soit sa portée heuristique, cette pratique photographique clandestine pose un problème déontologique dans les relations d’enquête de l’ethnographe. L’analyse réflexive que le chercheur se doit alors d’opérer contribue au processus de construction éthique vis-à-vis des enquêtés. |
