Summary, etc. | En tant qu’alternatives et critiques de la modernité capitaliste, les communautés utopiques intéressent depuis longtemps les chercheurs en sciences sociales. Mais la plupart de ces communautés ne survivent pas au-delà d’une génération, ce qui alimente les doutes sur leur raison d’être. Celles qui survivent ont pour point commun une forte composante religieuse ou philosophique qui lie les membres. Malheureusement le rôle de la religion dans les utopies contemporaines n’a pas fait l’objet d’une analyse systémique.Cet article vise à explorer le cas de Mayapur, une communauté rurale du Bengale occidental, en Inde, qui est la patrie spirituelle du vaishnavisme Gaudiya, branche de l’indouisme. Cette religion séculaire s’est répandue dans le monde entier à l’époque de la contre-culture et a inspiré de nombreuses personnes à se convertir et à émigrer à Mayapur. La communauté a récemment célébré son cinquantième anniversaire et s’enorgueillit de sa troisième génération d’enfants. Les éléments fondamentaux qui contribuent à la continuité de ce projet d’utopie sont les conceptions hindoues de l’espace et du temps, en ce compris le karma et la réincarnation, qui nourrissent la critique des dévots du présent dystopique de la modernité occidentale et motivent leur migration vers la campagne bengalie. |

Summary, etc. | As alternatives to and critiques of capitalist modernity, utopian communities have long been of interest to social scientists. But most of these endeavours do not survive past one generation, fuelling suspicion about their utility or merit. Those that do survive hold a common thread in that there is a strong religious or philosophical component tying the community together. But the role of religion in contemporary utopias has not been a consistent focus of analysis. This paper explores the case of Mayapur, a rural community in West Bengal, India that is the spiritual homeland of the Gaudiya Vaishanavism strand of Hinduism, a centuries-old religion that spread around the world in the counterculture era and inspired many to convert and migrate to Mayapur. The community recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and boasts its third generation of children. Core elements contributing to the continuity of this utopia project are Hindu understandings of space and time, including karma and reincarnation, which inform devotees’ critique of the dystopic present of Western modernity and motivate their migration to the Bengali countryside. |
