| Summary, etc. | Sur la base d’un an de travail de terrain mené en Éthiopie, en Birmanie et au Zimbabwe, trois pays touchés simultanément par une catastrophe dite « naturelle » et un conflit sociopolitique sur fond de pratiques autoritaires, cet article interroge le rapport que les acteurs humanitaires entretiennent avec le politique dans le cadre de réponses apportées aux catastrophes. L’instrumentalisation politique, la crainte du politique, la dépolitisation et l’internalisation d’une approche technocratique peuvent avoir des conséquences majeures. Les humanitaires « agissent » politiquement même quand ils ne croient que « réagir » en s’adaptant aux conditions difficiles auxquels ils doivent faire face. |

| Summary, etc. | Based on one year of qualitative fieldwork in Ethiopia, Myanmar and Zimbabwe–three countries simultaneously affected by a disaster, sociopolitical conflict and authoritarian practices–, this article interrogates how humanitarians engage with the politics of disaster response. Political instrumentalization, the fear of politics, depoliticisation and the internalisation of a technocratic approach can have far reaching consequences. Even when humanitarian actors think they that they only “react” to difficult working environments, they still act politically. |
